(SkyNewswire.com) --- The Oakland Zoo , the Houston Zoo, and the Maryland Zoo were recently approached by the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan (SSP) about helping fourteen former entertainment chimps find permanent homes. After careful consideration, the Oakland Zoo decided to accept two chimpanzees from a Northern California couple. The animals have slowly been integrated into the chimpanzee group and will retire at the Oakland Zoo.
The brothers are named Bernie and Eddie. Eddie is the eldest at 20 years old, and zookeepers say he is the peacekeeper in the group. Eddie has quickly become close with Moses, who used to be the only male in Oakland Zoo’s chimpanzee group. Bernie is a little younger at 16 years of age and was not fond of Moses in the beginning, but the two seem to be warming up to each other.

Animals and Pets : First Ever Online Pet Adoption Event at AnimalRoulette.com a Barking Success
|
| on 2010/7/25 7:00:00 (152 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- The first ever live online pet adoption event hosted by AnimalRoulette.com on Saturday, July 17th 2010 was a huge success. The participating animal shelter, Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, NY, reported that out of the 40 pets that participated in the event, 15 were have been adopted and at least 10 others have applications pending for their adoptions. Michael Ayalon of PetWebDesigner.com who developed this revolutionary website, is ecstatic with the outcome of the first event. "Watching the live video chat going on with people all over the Tri-State area looking to adopt pets was really exciting. We finally have a real solution to the growing pet adoption problem in the United States, and I'm happy to be a small part of that. I look forward to helping other shelters in New York and all across the country in the coming months."
The goal of AnimalRoulette.com is to help change the way pet adoptions can be done all over the world, and to get as many shelters involved as possible. The premise is simple. People looking to adopt pets can log onto the website, and they will be randomly put into a live video chat room with either another pet lover or a pet that is available for adoption. Pet lovers can share stories or introduce their pets to other pet lovers on the site, and people looking to adopt a pet can also find shelter animals that are looking for a new home. If they are happy with the animal or pet lover they are talking with, they can stay in the chat room. If they want to see another pet available, they can simply click “next” to enter another chat room, hence the “roulette” in the name.

Animals and Pets : National Trust Reports Puffin Sat-Nav Helping to Solve Mystery of Feeding Flight Paths
|
| on 2010/7/12 6:00:00 (134 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Cutting-edge technology is shedding light on the daily flight paths of puffins around the National Trust's Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast, and providing clues that could be vital to the seabirds' survival. Over the last year, scientists have used the technology to build up a picture of where the puffins are heading for when they take off from the Farne Islands each day. This shows that they are making a beeline for feeding 'hotspots' 20 miles out to sea. Along with their established and protected breeding grounds on the islands, these hotspots may be important areas to conserve in order to ensure the puffin's future survival.
Since last year, after a dramatic 30 per cent decline in puffin numbers had been recorded in 2008*, a team of researchers from Newcastle University have been working with National Trust wardens on Brownsman Island and deploying a whole raft of puffin technology to track their every move. David Steel, National Trust Head Warden on the Farne Islands, said: "This new research and our ongoing puffin count are finally piecing together a complete picture of puffin behaviour. "The puffins seem to be recovering slowly from the 2008 crash, with a five per cent increase in numbers recorded both this year and last.

Animals and Pets : Feeding Pets of the Homeless Leads National Pet Food Drive
|
| on 2010/7/7 7:30:00 (123 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- August 8-14 has been declared the first National Feeding Pets of the Homeless Week. The national organization, Pets of the Homeless, asks the public to locate a collection site in their community by visiting petsofthehomeless.org. Donations of pet food should be taken to one of the identified, local collection sites.
Homelessness is on the rise and between 10-25% of homeless have pets in need of food. There are over 200 collection sites in over 33 states and 3 in Canada. Donations of pet food and supplies are received at member collection sites and distributed to food banks, soup kitchens and homeless shelters which then give the pet food and supplies to their clients. Genevieve Frederick, Executive director of Pets of the Homeless said, "Since 2008, collection site members have taken over 52 tons of pet food and over $8,000 worth of supplies to homeless shelters, food banks and soup kitchens across the country. It is a combined effort to continue year-round collections of pet food. We applaud the caring, member volunteers who have reported their contributions. The need is great for communities to continue to donate to this on-going effort."

Animals and Pets : Sweeney's Offers Tips on How to Get Rid of Moles & Gophers
|
| on 2010/7/3 8:30:00 (183 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Sweeney’s (wrsweeney.com), an industry leader in developing safe and effective DIY pest control products, understands that no outdoor critter wreaks as much backyard havoc as moles and gophers. For homeowners who’ve had their lawns and gardens destroyed by unsightly mounds and trails, Stewart Clark, Sweeney’s Director of Research and Development, offers straightforward tips on how to get rid of moles. “There is no single solution for mole control,” says Clark, who has been actively researching mole behavior and mole control solutions for a decade. “Our approach is honest and direct – you might have to try a variety of products and get involved in the process. If you are persistent, you will eventually achieve your goal. But you’ll probably have to experiment with a few tactics to see what works best for you.”
Understand Your Adversary Moles live underground and rarely come to the surface. They create tunnels to search for food and can create up to 100 feet of new tunnels per day. These tunnels are what destroy lawns, and they can range from long surface tunnels to “volcano” tunnels that can go as deep as three feet underground.

Animals and Pets : A Beginner's Guide on How to Take Care of a Dog By John W. Wylie
|
| on 2010/6/27 18:40:00 (132 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Many people love their dogs. However, not every knows how to take care of a dog. This can be a challenge for those who did not grow up with one of their own or those who did not actually have to take care of one. The good news for pet owners is that caring for a dog can be learned and is accomplished by thousands of people each year. Here, we will take a look at a few things you should do to better take care of your own pup.
1. Get appropriate dog supplies. Much like a new baby, if you have never had a dog before, you will need to get a bunch of supplies. This will include things like chew toys, dog medicines, a crate, leash, collar, and really the list could go on and on. We suggest you start with some basic supplies and work your way up. Recognize that just like with a new baby, you will purchase some items you end up not using much, but until you have had a few dogs, you will be unable to determine what to exclude so we suggest instead to not worry about it.

Animals and Pets : What is the Largest Breed of Dog? By John W. Wylie
|
| on 2010/6/27 18:00:00 (132 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Ever wonder what the largest breed of dog is? If you have, you are not alone as many people from kids on up to adults have asked this question after coming into contact with some dogs. This only natural to think about as they are sure to have run across a large dog or two at some point in their lives whether it be in person or while watching one on television at a dog show or elsewhere. Either way, the big dogs command respect for their sheer size which is why many are curious to know who is the largest. Here, in this article, we will answer this question and pay homage to the largest dogs of them all.
The largest breed of dog is a little harder question to answer than it may first appear because it depends on exactly what you mean by largest. If largest means weight; then, the Old English Mastiff is the largest as its weight range exceeds other big dogs by a significant margin. However, if height is the true meaning you are looking for; then, the Irish Wolfhound will be the top choice as it is the tallest dog breed in the world. Therefore, as you can see, two people could give completely different answers to this question and both could still be correct. It all depends on how largest is defined.

Animals and Pets : Can Humans Get Worms From Cats? By Jeff T. Brantley
|
| on 2010/6/27 17:20:00 (127 reads) |
(SkyNewswire.com) --- Cats can get different types of worms and they can be passed along to humans and other animals. Roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms can be passed from a feline to a person. Since humans can get worms from cats, it is very important to have the cat treated for these conditions as soon as they are noticed.
Roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms are all parasites and they can be found in cat feces. Roundworms live in the small intestines of the feline and the worm's eggs may be found in the feces. A human would need to ingest the eggs, which would then hatch in the intestines and migrate to tissues within the body. Toddlers who play near cat feces and put their unclean hands in their mouths can develop roundworms. This infection is not easily diagnosed or treated in humans, so addressing it early in cats is recommended. Hookworms are a type of roundworm that can get into the body from the worm larvae. The larvae are found in cat feces and can penetrate the skin of humans. The skin can come in contact with the worm through soil, cat litter, or sand that has been contaminated. Once the skin is penetrated, there is an inflammatory reaction and the worms move around under the skin. They will die after several weeks or months, but the condition will be uncomfortable in the meantime.
